The City of Vancouver technically defines the Yaletown community as a part of the Downtown area, but it sits as a neighborhood of its own, wrought with unique residents and characteristics. This neighborhood sits alongside False Creek, and is among the youngest communities in all of Vancouver. Up until the World's Fair Expo in 1986, this area was primarily industrial in nature. At that juncture, Yaletown started to become more of a residential area, featuring apartment complexes and converted business properties. This transformed the region into one of Vancouver's most highly populated neighborhoods.

In the 1990's, Yaletown developed a reputation of affluence, as numerous Dot Com and trendy companies came into the area to do business. By the end of that decade, the neighborhood featured many film studios, high-end expensive stores, gourmet eateries and art galleries. It was for that reason that Yaletown came to be known as the ritziest part of the Downtown area.
 

The Dot Com business may have busted about 10 years ago, but that hasn't kept Yaletown from remaining a highly affluent neighborhood. This area has been chosen as a residence by pro athletes, movie stars, and many younger executive couples. It is because of this that many locals will joke about the gaudy lifestyle of the residents. They speak of seeing fit and toned, gorgeous women carrying their small dog in their handbag, and of stylishly dressed men spending a fortune at a local bar or club.

Yaletown is an ideal shopping destination (if you can afford to shop here), and an even more perfect location to people watch. Whether you have a pocketful of cash to throw around or merely a couple of bucks to invest on a cup of coffee at a patio café, there is always something to see or do in this busy neighborhood.
